Active Turkey

Mediterranean Kayak and Walk
The Lycian Way stretches for 500km along Turkey’s rugged coast and is recognized as one of the world’s top long distance walks. Sample its highlights in late April, when wildflowers are at their best. As you hike along spectacular sea cliffs and past little visited ruins, immerse yourself in ancient Lycian history. Then cast off your walking shoes, pick up your paddles and kayak from Göcek to Köycegiz.

*See Turquoise Coast Kayak trip for description of the kayaking segment.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Airport PickUp, Short Walk, Briefing, Overnight Hotel
Transfer to your accommodations in Kayaköy (Greek “ghost village” near Fethiye). Short walk around the valley if time allows. Dinner in the hotel. Briefing after dinner. Hotel Villa Rhaphsody.

Day 2: Walking
Day walk from hotel, through ruins of an abandoned Greek village, and down the hillside to the famous Olü Deniz beach (approximately three hours of walking). Picnic lunch. Transfer back to Villa Rhaphsody for dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Walking
Trekking on Lycian Way – bus from hotel to start of the Way at Ovcacik (ten minutes) and walk to Faralya. Views of Olü Deniz lagoon and Baba mountain, and spectacular cliff and sea views. Approximately 15 km, five to six hours, uphill most of the way. Accommodations – Faralya Deluxe Hotel.

Day 4: Walking
Trekking on Lycian Way – Faralya to Alinca. Fairly easy walk in the morning to village of Kabak, mostly downhill. Lycian pillar grave at Kabak. Then continue following the path uphill to Alinca. This section has spectacular cliffs and coastal scenery. Approximately 13 km, five hours.

Day 5: Walking
Trekking on Lycian Way – Alinca to Bogazici village and Sidyma (ruins of ancient city). Approximately 13 km, five hours. Vehicle pick up from Sidyma and transfer to Göcek (two hours). Overnight in hotel. Trip briefing for kayak section.

Day 6: Sea Kayaking
SSV will give out dry-bags that you will pack for the kayaking. Your extra luggage will be brought to Köycegiz where you finish the kayaking. After a kayak briefing in Göcek harbour, set off through a chain of islands within Göcek Bay. Camping tonight on an island.

Day 7: Sea Kayaking
Today, tackle Cape Kurtoglu, with its spectacular coastline. Start the day by paddling among the last of the islands before heading out of the bay. Then the landscape becomes more rugged and you may encounter some swell with waves bouncing off the headlands. Camp on the remote Kapidagi Yarimadasi peninsula in a small bay.

Day 8: Sea Kayaking
Optional rest day! (Depending on the weather and your guides’ discretion you may have a rest day or alternatively use it later in the trip). Optional activities are snorkeling and a hike up to ruins on the Kapidagi Yarimadasi peninsula. You should have some great views of the surrounding rugged limestone coastline and will use the time to exercise your legs.

Day 9: Sea Kayaking
Continue paddling along the long beach between Dalaman and Sarigerme. Pass Baba island and around Disibilmez Cape. Tonight, make camp in the small bay of Asi Koy and perhaps eat in a small restaurant on the beach.

Day 10: Sea Kayaking
Leaving Asi Koy, paddle past high cliffs and to a great swimming beach. After lunch, visit a cave and cruise along the length of Iztuzu beach (also known as ‘Turtle Beach’). Keep your eyes peeled for giant sea turtles and camp where the Dalyan river exits into the Mediterranean.

Day 11: Sea Kayaking
Paddle through the channels of the Dalyan delta and a labyrinth of reeds to the town of Dalyan where you will have a home-cooked Turkish lunch. Pass beneath impressive Lycian rock tombs built into a sheer cliff face and have the option to visit the ruined city of Caunos before navigating your way to some special undeveloped mud baths! Khe final twists and turns of the Dalyan River before finally arriving at Köycegiz Lake. Finish the day camping on a small beach or in the forest, near a hot sulphur spring and thermal baths.

Day 12: Sea Kayaking, Hotel
For the final paddle day, set off along the shores of the lake, which is a protected nature reserve. You may take a break on a small island with a ruined church, with time for a swim. Finish at the town of Köycegiz where you stay at a bed and breakfast hotel for the night. Say goodbye to the kayaks and the group generally will have a celebratory meal in town.

Day 13: Trip Concludes, Transfer to Dalaman
Group transfer to Dalaman Airport or the local bus station where you say your farewells.
