   Overview

A World by Sea Kayak
From the topics to the Mediterranean to the Polar Regions, Southern Sea Ventures specializes in sea kayaking adventures. Since it first operated sea kayak tours in Fiji and Australia in 1988, SSV has steadily expanded to offer a diverse range of paddling adventures around the globe. Enjoying the world’s beautiful places by kayak is a great way to refresh the spirit, and SSV’s wide tour selection offers something for all levels of ability, whether you are an experienced paddler or a novice to the sport.

Al Bakker, owner and manager of SSV, has worked in Adventure Travel since the 1970s. He set up and conducted whitewater rafting trips all over Australia for a decade before establishing his sea kayaking operation.

The company’s selection of warm water trips has expanded to include Turkey, Panama, and Tonga. Over the past decade, SSV has developed several innovative polar itineraries and its mother ship, Polar Pioneer, now supports Antarctic, Arctic, and Greenland kayak adventures, as well as a paddling exploration of the most remote Scottish islands. Kayaks are ideal for exploring these intriguing destinations that offer a kaleidoscope of wilderness and cultural experiences.

If you appreciate the outdoors, are moderately fit, and have a sense of adventure, one of these kayak adventures will be ideal for you. On the warm water Pacific Island and Hinchinbrook trips, beginners are welcome, but prior tent camping experience will help to prepare you for the remote areas you will visit. Pristine beaches, cultural interaction, and unique bird and marine life are the rewards! For the High Arctic, Greenland, Antarctica, Panama, Scotland, and Turkey trips, some previous paddling experience is required. The company is always happy to discuss your paddling experience and suitability for a particular holiday, and can often suggest appropriate tuition at home to prepare you for the sea kayaking trip of your choice.

Small groups, generally of 8 to 12 participants, ensure that you receive personal attention. The company believes in giving you the space to experience the wonders of the areas you visit in your own personal way. The trips are ideal for single participants, who do not pay a single surcharge and quickly make new friends. Ages generally range from 20 to 60, but participants have included high school students. The company’s team of expert guides will ensure you have a safe, comfortable holiday, whether you choose a self-contained sea kayaking and camping adventure, or day paddles from a mother ship.

SSV uses fleets of fast single and double kayaks, and provides all kayaking and safety equipment, including waterproof dry suits for polar paddling. For trips that involve camping, tents and group camping equipment are supplied.

Southern Sea Ventures prides itself on the presentation, variety, and taste of its meals, and indeed some of the company’s kayak guides are also qualified chefs. The wholesome and varied menus include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Onboard Polar Pioneer, delicious meals are prepared by professional chefs. If you have special dietary needs, just advise SSV in advance.

You will enjoy browsing through the company’s range of trips to select your ideal kayak adventure. Happy paddling!
