   Overview

Powell River Sea Kayak is a reasonably small sea kayaking company located on the northern Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Using the word “small” seems a little off, as they have experienced tremendous growth over the past 13 years and like to think of themselves as BIG – or perhaps professional is another way of putting it. However, in this age of colossal corporations, PRSK certainly is small! Perhaps the best way to think of Powell River Sea Kayak is as a small, family run company but with BIG service and BIG attention to detail. What this equates to is a guest experience that is more intimate – where each guest feels well cared for.

Powell River Sea Kayak is owned by Adam Vallance and his wife Laurie. They like to think their two children help as well, but at 3 and 5, it’s up for debate. This sea kayak company has been operating since 1995. This has certainly given Powell River time to fine-tune their operations and to learn what really works. One thing that works very well for is their location. As you may be reading this from the other side of the world, let’s start at the top of the geographical list and narrow down Powell River’s location from there: Canada, British Columbia, Sunshine Coast, Powell River, Desolation Sound Marine Park, Home of “The Cougar Lady”. The last one is kind of interesting, don’t you think? In 1999, Powell River Sea Kayak shifted operations from Powell River to an old homestead site near Desolation Sound Marine Park. This site was once home to “The Cougar Lady”. There are certainly some wonderful stories of The Cougar Lady’s tough life on Okeover Inlet, and these can be viewed on their website. However, with the old cabin and out buildings still standing, you may want to join PRSK for a more personal experience.

As much as the historical significance of this location is, well, significant, it is their proximity to British Columbia’s largest and most diverse marine park that truly stands out. Powell River Sea Kayak is essentially located as close to Desolation Sound Marine Park as possible (at least for vehicle access). Living and running the business in this vast part of the British Columbia coast has provided PRSK with an intimate knowledge of the area – and they keenly share this with guests to make each trip fun, adventurous and educational.

One more part of the company that is important to communicate is quality. Powell River Sea Kayak uses only the best equipment. If you’ve ever paddled with a graphite paddle, you will appreciate their minimal weight. PRSK uses graphite paddles. If you’ve ever paddled a plastic kayak, you will abhor their sluggish feel. PRSK only uses fiberglass kayaks. In fact, their touring kayaks are either brand-new or in new condition and they have a fine selection of singles and doubles to fit various body types. The rest of the gear is synonymous with the above: Kokatat PFDs, MSR tents, Thermarest sleeping pads, etc. Oh yes, and the food – it is to die for! The food is well planned, fresh, finely prepared and Powell River Sea Kayak has received many rave reviews.

There it is! Powell River Sea Kayak welcomes you to experience all this and more, and invites you to contact them directly with any questions you may have.
