Overview
Canada’s First School for Kayaks and Canoes
Kayaking is the kind of challenge that makes your heart pound and your toes tingle. It's a fast, exploding, roller-coaster kind of ride and best of all you do it solo. The ideal craft for whitewater, the kayak is sleek, maneuverable, fast and has a unique feature it can be righted when capsized by doing the Eskimo Roll. When starting out in whitewater, Madawaska strongly recommends taking your first course in a kayak. Your skills are easily transferable to either the open canoe or sea kayak. Sea kayaking is a new program that MKC has introduced which takes place on beautiful Bark Lake.
MKC’s combination of outstanding instruction, extraordinary meals and a stunning location is a formula that brings people back year after year for Ontario kayaking trip vacations. Located in Canada just a few hours drive from the nation’s capital, close to Algonquin Park in the Ottawa Valley, MKC boasts world-class instructors who return every year to teach on the guaranteed warm whitewater of the Madawaska River.
Founded in 1972, the Madawaska Kanu Centre now hosts 1,500 paddlers every summer, introducing hundreds of new enthusiasts to the excitement of whitewater kayaking canoeing. Under the direction of Claudia van Wijk, ten-time national slalom kayaking champion, and her husband, Dirk, MKC offers two and five-day instructional courses in whitewater kayaking and canoeing.
MKC is the perfect location for a learning vacation. With the Madawaska River flowing right past the front door, through a forest of pines and hardwoods and five other excellent whitewater runs all within an hour's drive, including the Ottawa River with its two channels, the Petawawa River, Upper, Lower and Palmer sections of the Madawaska River, excellent whitewater is certain all summer long.
MKC’s superb meals satisfy every paddler’s hungry appetite and the choice of lodging is sure to fit anyone’s needs. Choose between a lodge room (based on double occupancy), a dorm room or one of the many campsites in the MKC’s campground. After a day of paddling take advantage of the sauna, ready and hot for you when you return or the hot outdoor showers.
Choose a five-day kayak vacation or try one of the weekend clinics and discover why MKC is a world renowned kayak school.
MKC has a tradition to please the needs of every student. Don’t settle for anything less. Join the experts at the Madawaska Kanu Center and let them share their love of paddling with you.
