Flowing west from the Alaska Range is a river so beautiful and classic that it has been federally designated and protected as a Wild and Scenic River. The Chilikadrotna, hereafter referred to as the 'Chili', offers the rafter and fisherman a wonderful trip descending one of Alaska's most remote and spectacular waterways.
Begin this float at the heart, and what many have called the soul, of Lake Clark National Park – the astoundingly beautiful Twin Lakes. After the pilot deposits you on the shore of Lower Twin, spend the first day and a half exploring this wonderful place. Nestled near brush line, Twin Lakes country offers hiking second to none in Alaska. The mountains that surround this alpine gem beckon to be explored, and as you let your feet carry you up ridges and over tundra, keep your eyes out for Dall sheep, caribou, moose and bear.

Trip Itinerary
Day 1: Scenic Flight/Orientation After an amazing scenic flight through Lake Clark Pass, your charter will arrive in the bush community of Port Alsworth. A charming town on the edge of Lake Clark, it is the gateway to Lake Clark National Park and home to Alaska Alpine's summer base of operations. After meeting your guides and settling into your accommodations for the night, meet for dinner and conclude the day with an orientation and gear check.
Day 2: Float Plane Drop Off With a delicious breakfast energizing you for the day ahead, load the float plane and launch for the shores of Lower Twin. As the drone of the engine leaves, you will surely revel in the silence and solitude of this amazing place. Establish camp and stretch your legs with a hike into the hills overlooking the lake.
Day 3: River Rafting As you begin the float, the excitement will build when you enter the swift water at the mouth of the lake. On the first day, you are likely to see an incredible variety of waterfowl species including trumpeter swans, harlequin ducks, mergansers, goldeneyes, scaups, mallards, arctic loons and many more. Songbirds and raptors are also in abundance on the river so you'll need to keep the cameras and binoculars handy as you cruise in near silence through the Alaskan wilderness.
Days 4-6: River Rafting Over the next three days, negotiate Class II and III whitewater, logjams and sweepers. When you reach the confluence of the Chili and the Mulchatna Rivers, you'll be close to the last camp. The final day floating will be spent leisurely on the Mulchatna, and as some cast spinners for rainbow trout and arctic char, others will scan the banks for moose and the treetops for majestic bald eagles and great horned owls.
Day 7: Float Plane Pick-Up/Return to Anchorage The pick-up at Maribou Landing is an exciting finale to grand adventure as a skilled bush pilot negotiates a take-off in the swift current of the river. This trip is a wonderful and comprehensive introduction to magical and wild Alaska. Enjoy a celebratory lunch in Port Alsworth before your charter returns you to Anchorage by late afternoon. Please schedule homebound flights for after 8:00pm.
